A portfolio based CV is a collection of visual evidence you have of yourself showcasing your level of ability during football matches. For example; how you play against other teams, what you can do in game under pressure to how good your work rate is. These clips will help show all your strong points to potential teams you are looking to go to.
Why Do I Need It?
It is very beneficial to have this when applying for football teams at high semi professional and professional levels. A written CV alone isn’t good enough for teams at these levels as they get hundreds if not thousands of footballers asking for trials or to join their clubs on a weekly basis. The majority of teams at these levels haven’t got time to go through everyone’s written CV’s, although they are good and you are able to get a fair sense of someone and their abilities, some players may over-exaggerate a bit in their CV.
Having recorded footage of a football player in action visually shows potential teams your levels of ability and the qualities you posses. To them this is a much more accurate and much safer way to gauge a football players level of ability, less time consuming also.

How To Make A Video Recorded CV
Depending on the levels of football teams you have played for, the ones higher up the football pyramid (semi professional, professional levels) record their matches and post them up on their websites and YouTube. If you have played for any teams that do that, you can go to them and request the footage explaining what you need it for. The only thing with this is the footage will be of the whole team/match or clips of it, so you may not be featured heavily in the footage, if at all.
However, if you know you done some great things in that match then you know you will be featured in the footage quite a bit. You will want to collect as much footage as possible if you know you made a big impact in those matches because the more footage you have of different matches helps you show all your best qualities and also helps teams watching see them better. If you are able to get all the footage you have collected of yourself on to one cd, it will help your case that bit more as presentation goes a long way. It is more time consuming to keep popping in and out a different cd or to keep clicking on different websites and links to find more footage of you.
Another and much more effective way of putting together a portfolio based CV is if you can get the consent of your current team you play for to video record matches and also find someone you know to record you specifically in action. Preferable you would want that person to go to as many matches as possible to record you because you want to build up a good amount of clips playing against different teams to help capture all the good things you can do in a football match. So rather than record the whole game, their camera will be focused purely on you and all the things you do, that way you are able to edit easily and have clips of your best in action moments on the football pitch.
Football clubs love these when looking for players as it gives them less work to do as watching is much easier then going through paperwork reading. They will be able to make a better judgement on you, your abilities and whether they want you to come down and train/trial with them or not.
It is easy to over-exaggerate in a written CV but that can’t be done in a video recorded one as football teams are visually able to see you in action and the standard of football (leagues) you’ve played. [/sociallocker]
